Kelly Tuma - President
Kelly has taught at Warren County High School for the past three years. She received her BA from Hunter College and her Master in Art Education from City College New York. She has been a member of VAEA since 2008. She works hard for her students entering them in many shows and sponsors several programs at Warren County High School. |
Linda Miller - Vice President
Linda has taught 4 years at J. T. Henley Middle School in Albemarle County. She earned her BFA from the University of Arizona. She has participated in numerous shows in exhibits both in Arizona and Virginia. Linda was Middle School Art Teacher of the Year 2009 for the Blue Ridge Region. |
Kelley Shradley - Secretary
Kelley has been at Harrisonburg High School (Harrisonburg City Schools) for four years. She is an EMU graduate. Kelley participates in many events featuring her students’ work. She co-sponsors the Art Honor Society at Harrisonburg and helps host a soup fundraiser for charity.

Lynn Hilton-Conyers – Treasurer
Since her retirement from Waynesboro City Schools Lynn has become the Art Specialist SRP for Waynesboro Public School. She received her BFA from VCU and her MFA – Ceramics from JMU. Lynn has held all offices in the Blue Ridge Region and her most recent position on the VAEA board was Retired Art Teacher Member. Lynn has been Art Teacher of the Year for the Blue Ridge Region and continues to work in support of Art Education in the Region. In her “spare” time Lynn loves to teach others her love of ceramics and show her personal work in many shows and exhibits in the Valley. |

 Sarah Mays – President
Sarah teaches in Richmond Public Schools and has served as Vice President of the Central Region. She has presented at numerous conferences and was conference co-chair in 2009. Sarah has received numerous grants and actively exhibits her personal work, winning first place at the Central Region Art Teacher as Artist Exhibition. As Regional President Sara looks forward to serving on the VAEA board as well as leading the Central Region. |
Jessica Thomas – Vice President Jessica teaches at Providence Elementary School in Chesterfield County. She holds a MAE from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has presented at both VAEA and NAEA Conferences and has worked with Youth Art Month for Chesterfield County. Jessica’s work has been shown at the VMFA Artist Among Us exhibition as well as the Glen Allen Cultural Arts Center and the Jewish Cultural Arts Center. Jessica was a museum educator for three years and looks forward to being involved with the Central Region board. |
Lindsey Hurlburt – Secretary
Lindsey is beginning her third year as an elementary art teacher in Henrico County Public Schools at Crestview Elementary School. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2005 and spent several years as a board substitute in Henrico, Hanover, and Richmond City. Lindsey has been involved in the registration process at both the regional and state conferences and she is looking forward to having an active role in the future. |
Kristel French – Secretary
Kristel is a Longwood University graduate and currently teaches at Clover Hill Elementary School in Chesterfield County where she also sponsors the art club. She has attended numerous conferences and presented at the VAEA Conference in 2009. Kristel received a first place award for her stained glass at the 2008 Orchid Society Art Show. Kristel is looking forward to becoming involved in the Central Region. |
 Anne-Marie Slinkman – Treasurer Anne-Marie teaches at Greenwood Elementary School in Henrico County where she recently received a Partners in the Arts Grant for Greenwood’s Learning Garden. She has mentored student teachers for several years. Anne-Marie has presented at VAEA Conferences and is an active exhibiting artist. |
Carla Jaranson – President
Carla has been actively involved in the Northern Virginia Region for the past three years. She headed up the on-site registration for the 2008 VAEA conference in Centreville which our region hosted. She has presented at over 12 VAEA conferences. She served as regional secretary for the past two years. Carla has retired after teaching for many years, mostly in the Fairfax County School system. She received her BS in art education from Madison College in Harrisonburg, VA. She earned her Master of Interdisciplinary Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University. Carla was the Virginia Elementary Art Teacher of the Year for the State of Virginia in 2009. |
Sarah Philip – Vice President
Sarah has served as treasurer of the Northern Virginia region for the past three years. She has been actively involved since the 2008 VAEA conference. She teaches elementary art at the Congressional School of Viriginia, an independent school. She received her BA in Art Education from Kent State University and her MS from Walden University. She has taught workshops for the Northern Virginia Region. Sarah won the Elementary Educator Award for the Northern Virginia Region in 2009. |
Cheryl Miehl – Secretary
Cheryl has been an active member of the Northern Virginia Region for the past three years. She was very involved in the committee for the 2008 VAEA conference in Centreville which our region hosted. She has presented at several VAEA conferences. She has set up and coordinated the Art education 2.0 ning site for the region. Cheryl teaches middle school art at the Congressional School in Falls Church, an independent school. Previously she taught at the West Shore school system in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. She received her BS in art education from Millersville University in Millersville, PA. She is working on her Master of Interdisciplinary Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University. |
Katherine Sternberg – Treasurer
Kate has been actively involved in the Northern Virginia Region for the past three years. She was the moving force behind the fabulous “head” decorations for the 2008 VAEA conference in Centreville which our region hosted. She has presented at several VAEA conferences. Kate is the department head for Stone Middle School in the Fairfax County School system where she has taught for 11 years. Previously, she taught high school for nine years in New York State. She received her BFA in Painting and her Master of Science in Art Education from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Kate was the Middle School Art Teacher of the Northern Virginia Region for 2009. She is an accomplished artist and published illustrator/author of several children’s books. |
Sandee Darden – President
Sandee (BA, GMU 1984, Art Ed, MWC, VCU 2001, NBPT, 2007) is a Nationally Certified Art teacher with 18 years of experience in secondary art. She teaches art at Kings Fork Middle School in Suffolk, where she has served as the President of the Suffolk Public Schools Art Professionals for six years. She has been involved in VAEA for eight years, and was Tidewater’s Middle Division Art Educator of the Year in 2008. She has been Tidewater Region’s President since 2009. She looks forward to hopefully serving for the next two years!

Lisa Gardner – Vice President
Lisa is currently teaching 7th graders at Churchland Middle in Portsmouth. An avid art collector, she loves supporting her friends and colleagues. She has held leadership positions with the TVAEA for six years, and hopes to continue to serve.

Laura Jackson – Secretary
Laura is currently teaching art at Woodrow Wilson HS in Portsmouth. As coordinator of Tidewater’s Winter Workshop for the past three years, she is very active with the VAEA and with the Portsmouth community of art educators. She has been a member of NAEA for 25 years.

Juli Semanski – Treasurer
Juli has been a secondary art educator for 17 years. She teaches art full time at York HS and part time at PFAC and CHTAC. A professional artist as well, she participates regularly in art festivals like the Boardwalk Art Show, and gallery exhibitions. |
Ingrid Moldenhauer – President
Ingrid has worked for Botetourt County Public Schools as a High School Art Instructor for 3 years. She received her M.A.T. from Hollins University in 2007 and her B.F.A from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2001. She has participated in the VAEA Electronic Gallery, VAEA Conference, YAM exhibitions, SWVAEA workshops, and SWVAEA Educators Show. She is prolific with her own art; exhibiting regularly and receiving many awards.

Chris Jones – Vice President
Chris has worked as an Elementary Art Teacher with Roanoke City Public Schools for 14 years. He received his B.A. in art from Roanoke College in '93. Chris is an active participant in SWVAEA activities such as: YAM exhibitions, Art Educator Show, workshops. He has taken on leadership rolls with organizing meetings, assisting with planning, set up and take down of exhibitions and events both with SWVAEA and his school division. Chris is a prolific artist, participating in multiple exhibitions throughout the year.

 Elizabeth Campbell – Secretary
Elizabeth received her M.A.L.S. from Hollins University in 2009 a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies K-5 from Radford University in 1995. She served on the planning committee for the Southwest Virginia Art Education Association Conference at Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke, Virginia. Participated in Youth Art Month Shows and developing Scrapbooks for YAM Attended Virginia Art Education Association Conferences from 2006-2010. Beth has received many awards including: Roanoke County Teacher of the Year 2004 and McGlothlin Award Winning Teacher of Excellence 2004. She has multiple levels of experience with curriculum development committees. |
Linda Daumen – Treasurer
Linda is currently employed as a prek-7 art teacher with Patrick County Public Schools. she received her B.F.A. from Kansas State University and has also attended courses at Penland School of Crafts. Linda is President of the Patrick County Partnership for the Arts thus giving her a lot of experience organizing art events and exhibitions. |
